Silkroadnews - Iran and the European Union agreed on the resumption of direct political contacts broken several years ago following the tightening of the sanctions regime against Tehran over its nuclear program, informed the Iranian News Agency (IrTAG) with reference to the Foreign Minister of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif.
He said the negotiations between Iran and the EU will be launched "at the level of deputies" in the near future, then bilateral consultations will be given a ministerial format. He explained that the parties plan to initiate a dialogue with the discussion of issues such as energy, transport, trade, environmental protection, human rights and the threat of drugs.
The head of Iranian diplomacy dwelled on the problem of the escalating crisis in the Middle East, noting that the unstable situation in the region is "a serious threat to the entire world, especially the member countries of the European Union". According to him, terrorism and extremism are the main causes of the spread of violence and the increasing number of victims among the civilian population in the Middle East and the EU.
The minister expressed hope that the current visit of Mogerini to Tehran will help to open a new milestone in the relations of Iran and the EU, which will continue to be form the basis of mutual respect and equality.
