Almaty. May 24. Silkroadnews – Iran, India and Afghanistan signed an agreement on development of transit and transportation through the Iranian port of Chabahar, IrTAG reports.

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of the presidents of Iran and Afghanistan, Hassan Rouhani and Ashraf Ghani, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The agreements will enable India to carry Indian goods to Afghanistan and Afghanistan – to India through the Iranian port. The free economic zone in the area of Mehran in Chabahar on more than 50 hectares has already registered 130 Afghan companies ready to transport their goods via Iran.

As Hassan Rouhani said after signing the document, “the agreement opens a new page in the trilateral cooperation”, and the joint investments “contribute to the creation of a new international transit corridor”.

“With our joint investments we connect India, Afghanistan, Central Asia and Europe. For the future this day will be called the Day of Chabahar,” H. Rouhani said.

The document also opens up wide opportunities for other countries. The agreement is not directed against any third country, but aimed at cooperation with all the countries interested in cooperation, the Iranian president emphasized.
Economic co-operation emerging with the signing of the Chabahar agreement is a good example to encourage a broader cooperation in Asia, said the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

The emerging trade and transit corridor will become attractive for both Eastern Europe and China.

“It may also involve Russia, as one of the most important economic partners,” the Afghan president noted.
