Iran ranks third world’s largest walnuts producer, Iran’s Ministry of Agriculture says

Beijing. May 28. Silkroadnews - Representative of the Ministry of Agriculture Shokrollah Hajivand said that Iran is the third largest producer of walnut in the world, the Iranian Telegraph Agency (IrTAG) wrote.
According to Shokrollah Hajivand, increasing the area of walnut gardens and modernizing the process of the culture’s cultivation, it is possible to achieve productivity approaching the global average, Mehr News Agency writes.
He noted, the productivity of growing walnuts in Iran ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 tons per hectare.
He added, the walnut gardens have been planted in the provinces of Khorasan Razavi, Ardebil and Kordestan in an area of one hectare.
This year it is planned to begin revival and cultivation of walnut gardening on an area of up to 10,000 hectares this year, Hajivand also said.
He estimated the total area of walnut gardens in the country at 157,000 hectares. In 2013, Iran produced about 260,000 tons of walnuts.
Hajivand also noted, the world’s total area of walnut gardens total 1.2 million hectares.
In terms of the walnut gardens area and production volume Iran ranks the second and the third place in the world, respectively. China and the United States took the first and second place in the production of walnuts.
