Almaty. December 27. Silkroadnews – Iran announced the resumption of exports of handcrafted Iranian rugs to the United States after few years of sanctions, Western media reported.

“For eight months of the current Iranian year (started on March 20, 2016) deliveries of carpets to the United States reached $50 million from zero in the previous year in terms of value”, the publication quotes the head of the country’s National Carpet Center Hamid Kargar saying.

He noted that the Iranian rugs were not represented at the US carpets market for five years, as a result their niche has been occupied with similar goods of Indian production. Prior to the US sanctions introduction, the US used to be a leading market for Iranian carpets sale, with annual sales volume of $82 million accounting for 16.5% of global trade turnover. For five years of sanctions sales to China grew dramatically though: export in this direction raised from $8 thousand to $8 million per year.

The Persian rugs are considered to be not only the best in the world, but also the most expensive. For weaving the Iranian craftsman use only natural materials and dyes, which ensures a rug’s long lifetime. The Iranian carpets are also known for their uniqueness: you can hardly find two identical rugs, unless it was a special order.
