Almaty. November 8. Silkroadnews - Iran will start supplying gas to Basra by the end of the year, the Iranian Telegraph Agency (IrTAG) reported referring to the Islamic Republic News Agency.
“Iran exports 12 million cubic meters of gas per day to Iraq's capital, Baghdad and the figure will increase after completion of the gas pipeline project that is expected to reach Basra in coming months, deputy petroleum minister Hamid-Reza Araqi said,” report reads.
“Iran’s gas will reach Basra, most likely by the end of the Iranian calendar year (March 20, 2018),” Hamid-Reza Araqi noted.
The problems related to receiving money from Iraq for its import of Iranian gas has been solved, he added.
Being also the Managing Director of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), Araqi said that the part of the gas pipeline in Iran has been built.
“The part of the pipeline in the neighboring country is not ready yet, but it may be completed within three months,” the agency quoted him saying.
According to the sixth five-year plan for the development of Iran (2015-2020), gas export is planned to reach 80 billion cubic meters per year, of which 50 billion cubic meters are to be exported to the neighboring countries.
Turkey, which imports more than 30 million cubic meters of gas daily from Iran, is currently the biggest customer of Iranian gas.
As soon as the gas pipeline project between Iran and Iraq is completed, Iraq will become the biggest customer. When Iran starts supplying gas to Basra, the exports to Iraq will reach 40 million cubic meters per day.
