Almaty. January 10. Silkroadnews - An Iranian oil tanker in the East China Sea could burn for a month, the Channel News Asia news portal reports.
“The stricken Iranian oil tanker in the East China Sea could burn for as long as one month, South Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries told Reuters on Wednesday (Jan 10), as the blaze raged for a fourth day following a collision with a freight ship,” the report said.
Dozens of rescue teams fought strong winds, high waves and poisonous vapors to find 31 missing sailors and tame the fire on the ship amid growing fears that the tanker could explode or sink, the ministry officials said.
“We believe flames would last for two weeks or a month considering previous cases of oil tank accidents,” the agency quoted him saying.
The Sanchi tanker, operated by Iran’s largest oil transportation operator National Iranian Tanker Co., collided on Saturday with CF Crystal, which carries grain from the United States, about 160 nautical miles (300 km) off the coast of China near Shanghai.
Tanker transported 136 000 tons of condensate, flammable ultralight oil, equivalent to about 1 million barrels and costs about $60 million, to South Korea.
