Beijing. May 5. Silkroadnews - Israel has postponed its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council, TASS reports.
“After consulting with our partners, including our good friends, the State of Israel has decided to postpone its candidacy for a seat on the Security Council,” the Israeli Permanent Mission to the UN said on Saturday.
Elections of non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for 2019-2020 will be held on June 5. Israeli diplomats noted they will continue to work with their partners to remain “active” in the United Nations to exercise the country's rights in the decision-making processes of the world body.
The UN Security Council has the primary responsibility for international peace and security. The Security Council consists of 15 members of 5 permanent members (Russia, the United States, China, Britain, France) with 10 non-permanent members, out of which five are elected each year for a two-year term.
