Kazakhstan ratified agreement with the IAEA on creation of low-enriched uranium bank in Kazakhstan

Almaty. December 23. Silkroadnews – Kazakhstan has ratified agreement with the IAEA on the establishment of low-enriched uranium bank in the country, the press service of the President of Kazakhstan informs.

“The head of the state signed the Law of Kazakhstan “On ratification of the agreement between the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the International Atomic Energy Agency on creation of the low-enriched uranium bank in Kazakhstan”, the statement said posted on the Akorda site.

According to the agreement, the IAEA creates in Kazakhstan a bank of low-enriched uranium, owned by the IAEA. Under the agreement, the IAEA will bear the costs on acquisition, delivery and keeping of low-enriched uranium.

In its turn, Kazakhstan will pay the costs related directly to the storage of the IAEA low-enriched uranium, including payment for electricity, heating, necessary office space and costs for staff provided by Kazakhstan; costs associated with the LEU bank transfers within Kazakhstan, including the importation and disposal of property.

The agreement between the government of Kazakhstan and the International Atomic Energy Agency on the establishment of the IAEA LEU bank in Kazakhstan was made in Astana on August 27, 2015.
