Kazakhstan will consider the proposal of Tajikistan for the construction of Rogun HPP
Almaty. February 4. Silkroadnews - Kazakhstan will consider proposal of Tajikistan for the implementation of contract work under the project of construction of the Rogun hydroelectric power plant, reported the Tajik news agency (TajikTA) with reference to the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Rapil Zhoshybayev.
Rogun - hydroelectric station locates on the Vakhsh River, part of the Vakhsh cascade, being its upper stage. Its construction sites located 110 kilometers east of Dushanbe.
Under the project, a hydroelectric dam is 335 m. In the case of completion of the project, dam will be the tallest in the world. The project is unique in the fact that the machine room will be located in the body of the mountain. The design capacity of the plant will be 3600 MW, average annual production - 13.1 billion KW / h.
Dam should form a large Rogun reservoir with the volume of 13.3 km3 and a useful volume of 10.3 km3. The reservoir is planned to be used both in energy and irrigation purposes. Its construction is planned to be implemented in several stages, the first stage of capacity should reach 400 MW and average annual output 5 billion kW / h.
The cost of the completion of construction is estimated at $3 billion.
The project has been criticized by Tashkent because of its location in a zone of high seismic activity. Tajikistan intends on the safety of the dam - in particular, on earthquake-resistant design. Uzbekistan is afraid of reducing runoff of the Amu Darya, one of the two major rivers of Central Asia.
In September last year, the World Bank has confirmed the viability of the project.
