Bishkek. May 21. Silkroadnews – Kyrgyz MPs propose to reciprocate Uzbekistan’s failure to deliver gas to Southern Kyrgyzstan by blocking water supply to Uzbekistan. The subsequent statement was made at the session of the committee on energy and subsoil reserves.
The committee chairman, the MP, Rayan Tologonov proposed to block water supply to the neighbouring republic until the issue of Uzbekistan’s failure to deliver gas to Southern Kyrgyzstan is resolved.
24 bln cubic metres of water flows from Kyrgyzstan to Uzbekistan annually. Kyrgyzstan that is located at the upstream of Syrdarya can regulate the fsupply of its water to all the rest of its Central Asian neighbours. Kyrgyzstan’s National Institute for Strategic Studies estimates 77% of Uzbekistan’s river flows to come from the outside of the country.
As reported earlier, Uzbekistan stopped delivering gas to Southern Kyrgyzstan on the 14th of April. That happened despite the fact that the gas was already paid for. Kyrgyz PM Jomart Otorbayev said at the committee session this Tuesday that the Uzbek party is ignoring all the calls and letters related to the gas issue.
