Beijing. May 24. Silkroadnews - One page of the manuscript written by German philosopher Karl Marx was sold for more than 3 million yuan at a recent auction in China, Chinanew.com reports.
The auction was held in honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of the great philosopher.
The notes on the margins of the manuscript, written in London, were in English and partly in German.
The knockdown bid for this manuscript was set at 300,000 yuan. Ten minutes later, the closing bid reached 2.9 million yuan (nearly $455,000).
Taking into account the 15% commission, the auction ended at a higher price than the preliminary estimate of 1-1.2 million yuan.
In the same auction, the manuscript by Friedrich Engels, who together with Karl Marx founded the Marxist theory, was sold for 1.67 million yuan (about $261,000), which is also significantly higher than its original estimate.
According to the auction house, it was the first time when the manuscripts of two great thinkers were put up for auction.
