Minsk will not extradite the former president Kurmanbek Bakiev to Bishkek

Almaty. May 27. Silkroadnews – Belarus will not extradite the former president Kurmanbek Bakiev to the authorities of Kyrgyzstan, the Russian mass-media report.

“Kurmanbek Saliyevich Bakiev is a citizen of Belarus. Belarus, following the common international practice, does not extradite its citizens to other countries. The Kyrgyz side have already submitted the similar requests to our country before. They have been reviewed but not satisfied,” the media quotes the representative of Belarus prosecutor’s office saying.

It was reported, earlier, during the Bishkek meeting between the heads of two countries’ consular services, Kyrgyzstan once again raised the issue of the extradition of the ex-president Kurmanbek Bakiyev and his confidants convicted of serious crimes and staying in Belarus.

To remind the Kyrgyz court sentenced the former president of Kyrgyzstan Kurmanbek Bakiev and his brother Janish Bakiev to life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

On April 7, 2010, several thousand opposition supporters seized the Government House in Bishkek forcing President Kurmanbek Bakiev to flee to the south of Kyrgyzstan. During the seizure the building security forces opened fire for effect. The total number of victims of April 7 makes 87 people, more than 400 people got injured. Bakiev resigned a week after the overthrow.
