Almaty. June 29. Silkroadnews – Due to the Taliban militants’ activation NATO intends to build up its military presence in Afghanistan not to take part in combat operations though, Russian mass media reported.
“The ministers will consider the possibility to reinforce military presence in Afghanistan, yet we do not discuss return to participation in military operations”, NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said speaking at the press conference on the threshold of the meeting of defense ministers on June 29.
According to him, the issue is about sending 4000 military advisers and instructors to Afghanistan.
“The operational command in Afghanistan requested about 4000 additional military personnel. The ministers will discuss the possibilities to allocate additional forces and each country’s participation in this allocation”, he said.
NATO has completed the withdrawal of its fighting forces from Afghanistan in 2014. Since then, the alliance’s mission “Resolute support” (around 13.5 thousand people) has been operating in the country.
