Almaty. August 9. Silkroadnews – Nearly 30% of glaciers got melted in Tajikistan over the past 10 years and the Central Asian countries shall develop water resources management program, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon believes.

“Over the past decade Tajikistan’s glaciers have lost nearly 30% of their volume and this trend continues steadily. During this period only Fedchenko glacier area got reduced by two square km of ice. Therefore, for the Central Asian countries it becomes particularly important to develop the regional water management program based on equality and mutual understanding”, TajikTA quoted Emomali Rakhmon speaking at the International Symposium “Achieving universal access to water and sanitation”.

The president of Tajikistan added, this year lowering of the water level down to 30% is observed in major rivers of the region – the Amu-Darya and Syr-Darya – which has a strong impact on the water supply in the countries within the rivers’ basin.

He also reminded, the UN reported on the temperature rising at the global level. According to E. Rahmon, the global warming damage to the world economy can exceed $2 trillion per year.

It was reported, today Dushanbe opened the international water symposium with participation of more than 500 experts from 90 countries, including 47 international and regional organizations such as the SCO, CIS, World Bank, Red Cross and others.
