Number of poor people declined by two thirds in China
Almaty. January 8. Silkroadnews - The number of poor people in China declined by two thirds, Xinhua news agency reported.
“China has reduced poverty by more than two-thirds over the past five years,” the agency quoted saying by Liu Yongfu, director of the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development.
With this Liu noted that as of the end of last year, there were about 30 million Chinese living below the national poverty line, compared with 98.99 million in 2012.
“We are closer to the goal of eradicating absolute poverty,” Liu said.
The fight against poverty has become one of the “three tough battles” China intends to win over the next three years, as the country seeks to eliminate absolute poverty by 2020 and build a “moderately prosperous society.”
