Almaty. November 28. Silkroadnews - According to the UN, the number of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh reached 624,000 people, Xinhua News Agency reported.
“The number of Rohingya refugees who have fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh since Aug. 25 has reached 624,000, said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs,” the report said.
It is noted that last week an average of 430 refugees of Rohingya arrived in Bangladesh, which shows a slowdown compared to the previous week.
Rohingya left their homes in the northern state of Rakhine in Myanmar and fled to Bangladesh after attacks by the rebel army “Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army” on police posts followed by a military response from the Myanmar army.
Some Rohingyas crossed the Bay of Bengal on self-made rafts and boats to get to Bangladesh.
There is an agreement between Bangladesh and Myanmar on the repatriation of refugees, but UN representative Stephane Dujarric stressed “it is important that people are able to return to the place they came from "in a safe, dignified and protected manner”.
The agency also reminds, “the ethnic Rohingyas are denied citizenship in the largely Buddhist nation.”
