Salehi: Only IAEA has a right to verify Iran’s compliance with JCPOA
Almaty. December 21. Silkroadnews - Only the IAEA has a right to verify Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA, president of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Akbar Salehi said, Iran Daily reported.
“Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi said the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) is the only official institution in charge of verifying Tehran’s compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers,” the report said.
Salehi stressed that the IAEA has already verified the compliance of Tehran with its contractual obligations nine times.
The statement was made in response to a question about the position of U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly said that Iran does not comply with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and accused Tehran of not “living up to the spirit” of the agreement.
Salehi also noted, Iran believes that although IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano has requested clarification on how to verify section “T” of the agreement, there is no need for such an explanation.
Section “T” prohibits “activities that may contribute to the development of a nuclear explosive device”. It provides examples such as the use of computer models that simulate a nuclear bomb, or the design of multipoint explosive detonation systems.
Unlike many other parts of the agreement, the “T” section does not mention the IAEA or how its execution will be verified. According to Russia, this means that the IAEA does not have such authorities.
Iran and the P5 + 1 group - Russia, China, the United States, Britain, France and Germany - signed the JCPOA on July 14, 2015.
The agreement came into force in January 2016 and was supposed to terminate all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran all at once, but its implementation has been hampered mainly due to US policies.
