SCO will consider the possibility of creating a missile defense system
Almaty. July 19. Silkroadnews – The possibility of creating an anti-ballistic missile (ABM) defence system is considered within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), not all the SCO member countries have the necessary elements for it though.
This opinion, as reported by TASS, was expressed by the experts on Monday at the roundtable devoted to the recent agreement between the U.S. and Seoul to deploy US THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) in South Korea.
In particular, as senior research fellow at the Institute of the Far East at the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Petrovsky said, “it was recently discussed during preparations for a SCO summit. Some experts said that SCO member countries may consider the possibility of creating a missile defense system (in the framework of the organization – Silkroadnews)”.
“If we talk about the missile defense system (in SCO – Silkroadnews), not all member countries have such elements”, said, in his turn, deputy director at the Institute of CIS countries, a military expert, Vladimir Yevseev.
“Two countries – Russia and China – have such systems,” V. Yevseev also added, having noted that, in his opinion, Russia and China should unite their potential to create this kind of systems.
“In reality, only Russia and China can talk about the possibility to create a full-fledged missile defence system. And other states (SCO members countries – Silkroadnews) should join them,” he summarized.
