“A van has ploughed into pedestrians outside a Starbucks cafe in central Shanghai. At least eighteen people have been taken to hospital, three of them with serious injuries, authorities say,” the report reads.
The cafe is located on People’s Square at the far end of the busy shopping area of Nanjing Street in Shanghai, near a major subway station.
The incident occurred at around 09:00 (01:00 GMT), when the area was filled with buyers and commuters.
In turn, the Chinese media report the accident was caused by a smoking driver who accidentally lit the vehicle on fire and lost control. The injured driver 40; is suspected of illegally transporting dangerous goods. 17 injured pedestrians were hospitalized: non are in critical condition.
