Sweden to grant USD 1.2 billion for long-term projects in Afghanistan
Kabul. March 14. Silkroadnews – Sweden confirmed its decision to grant USD 1.2 billion for long-term projects in Afghanistan.
“The funds are to be spent within the next decade for education, private sector, human rights, gender equality and democracy promoting projects”, said the Senior Civil Representative of Sweden in Afghanistan, Jonas Westerlund last Wednesday.
Half of these funds are to be spent by the government, the other half will support various NGOs in Afghanistan. Projects are to take place in all 34 Provinces of Afghanistan. Those projects will run between 2015 and 2025.
Sweden is one of the main donors when it comes to helping Afghanistan. In August last year, it pledged to increase aid from USD 92.3 million to 130 million.
It also pledged to leave around 200 soldiers in Afghanistan after NATO withdrawal in 2014.
