Tajikistan offers to create an international fund for the protection of glaciers
Almaty. September 24. Silkroadnews - Prime Minister of Tajikistan Kohir Rasulzoda on climate summit at the meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York, called on to create a fund on protection of the glaciers, passes Tajik Telegraph Agency (TajikTA).
In particular, the Prime Minister expressed concern on reducing area of glaciers in Central Asia due to their melting.
According to him, from 1956 to 1990, the area of glaciers, which are the basis of water formation in Central Asia, fell three times, in particular in Tajikistan by 30%.
According to him, Tajikistan ranks 150th in the world in terms of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Per capita carbon dioxide emissions in Tajikistan is ten times less than the world average, and in the Central Asian region for this indicator takes the last place.
K. Rasulzoda noted that "the use of hydropower as a source of electricity generation, will serve the development of the economies of the region and reduce greenhouse gas emissions". According to him, 98% of electricity comes from hydropower in Tajikistan and 70% produceв at CHP.
The Prime Minister also noted the problem of power shortage in the autumn-winter period. So, he said, "part of the population in the winter of daily receives electricity only 6-7 hours".
