Almaty. March 31. Silkroadnews - Tajikistan provides up to 60% of water resources in Central Asia, reported the Tajik news agency (TajikTA).
"Tajikistan provides up to 60% of water resources in Central Asia, which has not escaped the "water problems" ", - said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Sirodzhiddin Aslov, speaking at an interactive high-level dialogue on the International Decade for Action "Water for Life" in New York.
"According to him, only 58.5% of the population has access to improved sources of drinking quality water, and about 30% are provided with improved treatment facilities. Particularly unfavorable situation occurs in the countryside. Only half of the total population there, is provided with safe drinking water", - said the UN News Center.
In turn, First Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations Jan Eliasson noted that due to the threat of water shortages and related geopolitical tensions, the international community should usher in a new era of "hydrodiplomacy".
"Water scarcity causes personal tragedies, but also gradually becoming a threat to international peace and security. Today, there is a need for "hydrodiplomacy": water shortages should become an incentive for cooperation", - said Jan Eliasson.
Seriousness of the problem confirm the data of the last report of UNESCO, where it is noted that if the community does not make radical changes in the direction of the management of water resources, by 2030, water supplies will be reduced by 40%. It is expected that by mid-century, the demand for water will be doubled.
First Deputy Secretary General of the UN is convinced that the way out can be offered  by international cooperation.
"The joint use of water resources always strengthened ties between the two countries. Rather than take this as a problem, we should see it in cooperation potential solution and develop innovative dynamic hydrodiplomacy "- he said.
