Taliban continue to attack checkpoints in Farah province

Beijing. February 21. Silkroadnews - Armed clashes between the police and Taliban militants continue in several areas of the western Afghan province of Farah, the Afghan Telegraph Agency (AfTAG) reports.
In Farah, province’s capital, the Taliban took over a police checkpoint. The security forces have retaken it over but suffered losses.
According to the provincial council, at least 5 law enforcement officers were killed, and four other were taken hostage by the attackers. When retreating, the militants set fire to an armored police car, and also took with them weapons and ammunition from the control point service. Sources at the law enforcement agencies said the Taliban lost 13 people dead.
Another attack on the checkpoints occurred on the night from Monday to Tuesday in Bala Buluk district near the local market. Police lost from 8 to 15 people, 13 militants were killed.
The Afghan media also reported that up to 10 guards were taken hostage, but the province governor's press office denied this information.
This was not the first such attack in Bala Buluk over the past week, 3 police officers were killed as a result of a sudden assault by militants on Saturday night.
To remind, unstable security situation in Farah and activities by anti-government forces resulted in civil protests and resigning of the province’s governor at the end of January.
