Almaty. August 7. Silkroadnews - The foreign ministers of member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), at the 48th meeting of foreign ministers, reached a consensus on the South China Sea, Xinhua news agency reported.
The participants of the conference reviewed the preventive measures to manage and control security risks.
In addition, the Foreign Ministers of the ASEAN member countries agreed to provide Norway a status of dialogue partner in some areas.
According to Russian media, the adoption of the final declaration was delayed for a long time, since ASEAN countries could not agree on the items on the territorial disputes with Beijing. The most rigid positions occupied by Vietnam and the Philippines, but Cambodia as a strategic partner of China blocked the sharp wording. In addition, Malaysia, despite having territorial disputes with China also took a moderate position, guided by the close economic ties with Beijing.
As conceived by the countries members of the Association, the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea will be able to limit military activities and help reduce tension.
