The mosque named in honor of Islam Karimov was opened in Tashkent

Almaty. October 7. Silkroadnews – The mosque «Islom ota» renamed in memory of the first president of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov, has been opened after restoration in one of the districts of Tashkent, UzTAG reported.

«The opening ceremony of the mosque «Islom ota» renamed in honor of Islam Karimov was held today, after restoration works completion», the statement released on Friday says.

According to it, the mosque can perform praying for 560 believers. It has a library and rooms for ablutions. The building is also fitted with the air conditioning system and equipment for people with disabilities.

Mosque «Jurabek» (the former name) built in 1897 was almost completely burned in spring of 2015. Restoration works were carried out with the funds provided by L. Karimova-Tillyaeva and her husband, businessman Timur Tillyaev.

The first Uzbek President I. Karimov died on September 2 at the age of 78 after suffering a stroke. He was buried according to Muslim tradition in his homeland in Samarkand.
