The UN confirmed participation in the meeting on the Syrian situation to be held in the capital of Kazakhstan

Almaty. January 6. Silkroadnews – The United Nations (UN) looks to take part in the meeting on Syria to be held in Astana and plans using the meeting’s outcomes for the Syrian talks in Geneva, “Kommersant” writes.  

“We are looking forward to this meeting within the context of getting ready for our session scheduled for early February. We plan to attend the meeting and will contribute to its success and decisions that can be further used in the course of the Geneva talks”, the UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said.

He noted that “any initiatives of this kind are welcomed and should be supported”.

To remind, the negotiations on the Syrian settlement with the participation of almost all the opposing forces is expected to be held in Astana on January 23. The arrival of the Russian experts involved in preparation of the upcoming summit is planned for January 9-10. Negotiating platform in Astana is expected to complement the Geneva talks, which, in turn, are scheduled for February 8.
