Almaty. December 14. Silkroadnews - Tourists damaged the section of the Great Wall of China by cooking a meal, South China Morning Post reports.
“A section of the Great Wall of China northeast of Beijing was damaged after a group of visitors started a fire to cook a meal,” the report said.
The incident occurred at the section of the Panlong Mountain. The volunteers in charge of protecting the section found the fire. On the photos they made, one can see the tourist setting a stove using bricks of the wall to cook the noodles.
“We asked them to follow us down the mountain, but they were uncooperative and refused to show us their identity cards,” the volunteers said.
The fire was extinguished, but it can be seen in the photo that the bricks on this section of the Great Wall have been charred.
According to Chinese law, anyone committing acts damaging or endangering cultural monuments, receives a warning, or could be fined up to 500 yuan (US $75) or even detained for a period of five to ten days.
The Great Wall of China is one of the most famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites, annually visited by 10 million people.
