Turkmenistan calls to convene the UN Conference on Environment in Central Asia

Almaty. September 26. Silkroadnews – Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov suggested a special conference, under the auspices of the UN, dedicated to measures for improving environmental situation in Central Asia be held next year.

«Water problems are of special importance in Central Asia and in some cases they even serve as a determining factor for peace and development», Trend quotes the head of the Turkmen Foreign Ministry saying at the 71st session of the UN General Assembly.

Thus, the minister expressed the hope, the States of the region will form a unified strategy to support and use the regional resources.

This year Turkmenistan takes the chairmanship in the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS).
Founded in the 1990-s by Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, the IFAS is aimed to finance the Aral Sea environmental programs and joint projects. In December 2008 the IFAS was granted observer status in the UN General Assembly.
