Beijing. June 29. Silkroadnews - The U.S. will consider the possibility to recognize Puerto Rico as an American state, the Kazakh Telegraph Agency (KazTAG) reports with reference to Lenta.ru.
Reportedly, a corresponding bill to the Congress has been submitted by the representative of the archipelago in the House of Representatives Jennifer Gonzalez-Colon. Under the bill, supported by 36 congressmen, Puerto Rico is planned to become the U.S. state no later than January 1, 2021.
J. Gonsales-Colon noted, the island remains the world’s oldest colony. In her opinion, the adoption of the bill will put an end to the inequality of Americans living in Puerto Rico.
A referendum on the political status of Puerto Rico was held in Puerto Rico on June 11, 2017, with 97% of population who voted to choose the statehood. The results of the plebiscite were of a recommendatory nature. Anyway, the decision by the U.S. Congress is required to recognize Puerto Rico as the 51st state within the U.S.
Being controlled by the U.S. government, Puerto Rico, unlike Hawaii, is not a U.S. state. Puerto Ricans have dual citizenship - Puerto Rico and the United States, without a right to vote in the U.S. presidential election.
