Almaty. December 14. Silkroadnews - UN meeting on human rights in North Korea violates organization’s charter, China believes, “People’s Daily” reports.
“China opposes the UN Security Council's deliberation on the human rights situation in North Korea,” the agency quoted Wu Haitao, China’s Ambassador to the United Nations, saying.
With this Wu reminded the Council that China opposes the participation of the UN Security Council in resolving human rights issues, having referenced to the UN Charter, which clearly outlines the responsibilities of the Council.
“UN Security Council’s primary responsibility is to safeguard international peace and security. It is not a place to deliberate human rights issues, nor should it be allowed it politicize such issues,” Wu said.
“China persists in the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, upholds the principle of maintaining peace and stability, resolves issues through dialogue and consultation, and opposes war and unrest on the Korean peninsula,” he added.
“At present, the Korean Peninsula situation is still complex and sensitive. The members of the UN Security Council and all parties concerned should do more to help ease the situation and avoid excitement and action that could escalate the situation. The Council's discussions on the issue of human rights in North Korea run counter to the abovementioned objectives, and are of no avail,” the agency quoted Wu saying.
He pointed out, China wants all parties involved in the situation to fulfill their commitments and play a constructive role to ensure the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, realizing peace and stability in the region.
