Beijing. February 6. Silkroadnews - President Trump’s administration believes Islamabad should support Washington in countering extremist groups, the Afghan Telegraph Agency (AfTAG) reports.
The U.S. expects and demand Pakistan to offer real support in fighting terrorists that plan and carry out attacks against the forces and interests of the United States. Pakistan should make a choice whether they want to return to productive relations the two countries had after September 11 or move in a different direction, Nathan A. Sales, the Coordinator for Counterterrorism at the Department of State, said.
Relations between Washington and Islamabad began to deteriorate after the U.S. introduced its new strategy for South Asia and Afghanistan in August 2017. Then Pakistan was accused of supporting radical organizations that operate against the U.S. military forces and their allies in Afghanistan.
In early January, the Department of State announced a decision to suspend its assistance to Pakistan in the security sector until the country’s authorities take decisive action against extremist groups. Pentagon spokesman Patrick Evans said the U.S. froze at least $900 million allocated for Pakistan to carry out anti-terrorist operations.
