US to continue cutting financial aid to Pakistan

Beijing. May 24. Silkroadnews - The United States plans to continue reducing financial assistance to Pakistan, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said at the House Foreign Affairs Committee in Congress on Wednesday, the Afghan News Agency reports.
“With respect to Pakistan, we released far fewer funds in 2018 than in the year prior. The remainder of the funds available are under review. My guess is that that number will be smaller still,” TASS quoted him saying.
Pompeo also said, the US needs to take note of treatment meted out to American diplomats by Pakistan. “Our State Department officials are being treated badly as well. Folks working in the embassies and in the consulates and other places are not being treated well by the Pakistani government either, a real problem that we need to take the measure of also,” he said.
In early January, the State Department announced a decision to suspend providing assistance to Pakistan in the security sector until the country’s authorities take decisive action against extremist groups, including the Taliban and Haqqani network. Pentagon spokesman Patrick Evans said that the US froze at least $900 million for anti-terrorist operations allocated for Pakistan.
