Uzbekistan to introduce a new method of cotton growing
Almaty. November 25. Silkroadnews – Uzbekistan and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) implement a project for production of socially responsible and environmentally sustainable cotton, Uzbek Telegraph Agency (UzTAG) reports.
“The project assumes a creation of a sustainable business model for cotton cultivation in Uzbekistan meeting the requirements of Better Cotton Initiative (BCI). Many well-known brands producing knitted products, such as H&M, Levi’s, Adidas, Nike and others, purchase raw cotton grown on the BCI program”, the statement said.
According to the IFC representatives, using the BCI methodology will allow Uzbek farmers to raise the volume of cotton grown along with reduction of production costs and also let textile producers to strengthen their positions in the global market.
With this project the Uzbek side proposed to work out the technological map of cotton cultivation, organize system training of professionals needed, automate the process of project implementation including the ICT use taken into account, organize feedback mechanism, involve Ministry of Agriculture and the Council of Farmers of Uzbekistan to take part in the project as partners.
