Xinjiang to build “Great Wall” to protect the Chinese borders

Beijing. January 23. Silkroadnews - Xinjiang will build a “Great Wall” to protect the Chinese borders, Singapore’s TODAYOnline reports.
“China’s violence-prone far western region of Xinjiang will build a “Great Wall” around its borders to prevent the infiltration of militants from outside the country,” the report said.
“We will try our best to leave no gaps or blind spots in social security management and ensure the key areas remain absolutely safe,” Xinjiang governor Shohrat Zakir said.
At the same time, he noted, the roads and infrastructure along the border will be improved.
“The overall situation was stable in 2017, which made people feel safer. We won’t allow separatism to stage a comeback and will ensure religious extremism never rises again from the ashes and terrorist attacks are doomed to failure,” he added.
The announcement of plans to build the Great Wall were similar to the words by President Xi Jinping, he said last year at the annual session of the country’s parliament, calling on Xinjiang’s lawmakers to build a “great wall of iron” to ensure the stability and security of the country.
Hundreds of people were killed in Xinjiang in the last few years as a result of clashes between Uighur Muslims speaking one of the Turkic languages and the ethnic majority of the Han Chinese people. China accused Islamist extremists and separatists, some of whom have links to groups outside the country, of the violence.
In Xinjiang, it has been relatively quiet for the past year or so after a number of incidents that occurred during the period of increased security measures, such as the collection of DNA and other biometric data from the whole population.
